Prairie Musings

Prairie Musings

Pasture Gaits

The walk
One two three four
A four beat gait
Begins the tour
Along the lane
And down the road
Beside the wheat
Just recent sowed
Old Joe can walk
See front hoof track
And then the back
Lands just atop
In even stride
A horse length long
A horse width wide
An easy gait
For looking ‘round
To notice larks
Hear lilting sound
To count the clouds
All blue and white
To smell the sage’s
Crisp sharp bite
Or hum in time
An easy song
With four beat words
To sing along
The walk.

 The Trot
One two
Trot, trot
Quick beat
Trot, trot
Left front
Right hind
Trot, trot
In time
Hands low
Seat strong
Calves tight
Legs long
Chest up
Heels down
Short stride
The jog
So soft
Trot long
So flat
So strong
The ground
Zips by
You float
You fly
You slow
To jog
Up hill
One two
The trot.

The Canter
One two three
Three beat gait
Rocking chair
Rolling state
Covering ground
Thudding hooves
Hollow sound
Flowing mane
Feeling good
Muscles blend
Horse and man
Seek one end
Hoof and hand
Motion sync
Forward go
Rise and sink
Free to flow
Sky and earth
Warming sun
Test his worth
Let him run
Gallop on
With the speed
For a nod
All his feet
Leave the sod
Gather for
One more stride
Tracks become
Ever wide
Slow it back
To a whoa
Stroke his neck
Let him blow
Thanks Ol’ Joe
The canter.
